Part 1:

In Part 1, we will make thirteen Box blocks.  Each will measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2" unfinished.  When the blocks are sewn into the quilt, they will measure 12" x 12".

Step 1:  Sew a Light 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" strip to the top and bottom of a Dark 4-1/2" square.  Press the seam allowances toward the Dark fabric.  Make 13.  (This unit should measure 8-1/2" x 4-1/2".)

Step 2:  Sew a Light 2-1/2" x 8-1/2" strip to the left and right sides of a Step 1 unit.  Press the seam allowance toward the Dark fabric.  Make 13.  (This unit should measure 8-1/2" x 8-1/2".)

Step 3:  Sew a Very Dark 2-1/2" x 8-1/2" strip to the top and bottom of a Step 2 unit.  Press the seam allowance toward the Very Dark fabric.  Make 13.  (This unit should measure 12-1/2" x 8-1/2".)

Step 4:  Sew a Very Dark 2-1/2" x 12-1/2" strip to the left and right sides of a Step 3 unit.  Press the seam allowance toward the Very Dark fabric.  Make 13.  (This unit should measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2".)  You will now have thirteen Box blocks.

Part 2:

In Part 2, we will make twelve Snowball quilt blocks.  Each will measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2" unfinished.  When the blocks are sewn into the quilt, they will measure 12" x 12".  We will use the "square in the corner" technique to make this block quicker and easier.

Step 5: Using a ruler and pencil, draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of all (48) Medium 4-1/2" squares.

Step 6: Place a Medium 4-1/2" square on the upper right corner of a Floral 12-1/2" square.  Sew along the line that you marked in Step 5.  Trim fabric 1/4" above the seam and press the seam allowance toward the Medium fabric.

Repeat in each of the remaining corners until your block looks like the one at the beginning of Part 2.  Make 12.  (The block should measure 12-1/2" x 12-1/2".

Part 3:

In Part 3, we will join our Box and Snowball quilt blocks together to form the quilt center.

Step 7: Sew three Box blocks and two Snowball blocks together as shown below:  Press seam allowances toward the Box blocks.  Make 3.  (Each row should measure 12-1/2" x 60-1/2".)

Step 8: Sew three Snowball blocks and two Box blocks together as shown below:  Press seam allowances toward the Box blocks.  Make 2.  (Each row should measure 12-1/2" x 60-1/2".)

Step 9:  Sew the rows together as follows:  Step 7, Step 8, Step 7, Step 8, Step 7.  Press the seam allowances to one side.

Part 4:

In Part 4, we will add the borders.

Step 10:  Sew a Light 2-1/2" x 20-1/2" strip to a Light 2-1/2" x 40-1/2" strip along one short side to make a Light 2-1/2" x 60-1/2" inner left/right border strip.  Press the seam allowance to one side.  Make 2.

Step 11: Sew a Light 2-1/2" x 24-1/2" strip to a Light 2-1/2" x 40-1/2" strip along one short side to make a Light 2-1/2" x 64-1/2" inner top/bottom border strip.  Press the seam allowance to one side.  Make 2.

Step 12: Sew a Step 10 inner left/right border strip to the left side of the quilt.  Repeat on the right side.

Step 13:  Sew a Step 11 inner top/bottom border strip to the top of the quilt.  Repeat on the bottom.

Step 14:  Sew a Floral 5-1/2" x 24-1/2" strip to a Floral 5-1/2" x 40-1/2" strip along one short side to make a Floral 5-1/2" x 64-1/2" outer left/right border strip.  Press the seam allowance to one side.  Make 2.

Step 15:  Sew a Floral 5-1/2" x 34-1/2" strip to a Floral 5-1/2" x 40-1/2" strip along one short side to make a Floral 5-1/2" x 74-1/2" outer top/bottom border strip.  Press the seam allowance to one side.  Make 2.

Step 16:  Sew a Step 14 outer left/right border strip to the left side of the quilt.  Repeat on the right side.

Step 17:  Sew a Step 15 outer top/bottom border strip to the top of the quilt.  Repeat on the bottom.

Part 5:

To finish the quilt, you will need to layer the quilt top, batting, and backing fabric and baste for the quilting method you prefer.

Bind the quilt with the Very Dark 2-1/2" fabric strips that were included in the cutting instructions.
