Part 3 - Square in Squares Block

printer friendly version   |   PDF

Sewing Instructions:

Step 1:  Using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut eight Color C 3-7/8" squares once diagonally for a total of sixteen triangles.

Step 2:  Stitch a Color C half triangle (that you cut in Step 1) to two opposite sides of a Color A 4-3/4" square as shown below.  Press seam allowances toward Color A fabric and trim points.  Stitch a Color C half triangle (that you cut in Step 1) to the two remaining sides of the Color A 4-3/4" square as shown below.  Press seam allowances toward Color A fabric and trim points.  Repeat for a total of four A/C units.

Step 3:  Stitch a Color D 7-1/4" quarter triangle to two opposite sides of an A/C unit as shown below.  Press seam allowances away from the Color D fabric and trim points.  Stitch a Color D 7-1/4" quarter triangle to the left side and stitch a Color B 7-1/4" quarter triangle to the right side of the A/C unit.  Press seam allowances toward the center of the block and trim points.  Repeat for a total of four A/B/C/D units.

Step 4:  Using a rotary cutter and ruler, cut four Color A and four Color B 6-7/8" squares once diagonally for a total of eight triangles of each color.

Step 5:  Stitch a Color B 6-7/8" half triangle to the upper left side and a Color A 6-7/8" half triangle to the lower right side of an A/B/C/D unit as shown below.  Press seam allowances toward the center of the block and trim points.  Stitch a Color A 6-7/8" half triangle to the upper right side and stitch a Color B 6-7/8" half triangle to the lower left side of the A/B/C/D unit.  Press seam allowances toward the center of the block and trim points.  Repeat for a total of four Square in Squares blocks.  Each block should measure 12-1/2" at this point.  They will measure 12" when we sew them into the quilt.

That's it for Part 3!  You may now proceed to Clue #4.
